Some pretty devastating news came for Spiderman fans on August 21. The fan-favorite Avenger is reportedly leaving the MCU or at least the version played by Tom Holland will.
But that’s not all that went viral on August 21. Keep reading to find out what had the Internet up in arms on this day.
Spiderman’s Web Is Removed from the MCU
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures announced on August 21 they are parting ways, which means the Spiderman version played by Tom Holland in the latest revamp on the spider superhero story will be completely removed from the MCU.
In 2015, Sony and Marvel Studios (owned by Disney) entered an exciting and unique agreement: they would share the Spider-Man character. That’s how Tom Holland’s beloved version of the superhero was introduced into the MCU and got 2 feature films on his own. The money made from the MCU movies (Avengers, Civil War) would go to Disney, while the solo film’s earnings would go to Sony.
But, when Far From Home, the newest Spiderman movies, hit big, Disney proposed a 50/50 share of the proceeds, and Sony declined. As a result, Spiderman is out of the MCU.
Fans are devastated and took to social media to air out their grievances. Even Jeremy Renner, Holland’s costar in MCU, posted a picture of himself in Hawkeye gear with the caption ‘Hey @sonypictures we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you.”
Even Ryan Reynolds Can’t Fix It
One possible silver lining for fans was a possible crossover between the Spiderman franchise and Deadpool, as both the characters are the property of Sony.
The Deadpool movies have an entirely different tone than the MCU and are intended for a much older audience, so it was believed Marvel Studios would not have agreed to such a collaboration. Now that Marvel Studio is out of the picture, fans were hopeful they may see the two superheroes share the screen.
Alas, Ryan Reynolds quickly shattered any such hope. When asked if fans could ever see such a movie, Reynolds replied “You can. But you can only see it in my heart.”
